In line with the announcement from UN Women Australia last week, the theme for International Women’s Day 2023 is Cracking the Code: Innovation for a gender-equal future.
This theme emphasizes the importance of bold, transformative ideas, inclusive technologies, and accessible education in combating discrimination and the marginalization of women globally. This is considering the priority theme of the UN’s 67th Commission on the Status of Women – Cracking the Code.
This year's theme builds on the idea that by embracing new technologies and advancing women's skills and knowledge in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), we can accelerate our progress towards gender equality.
Despite innovation's ability to transform lives, many barriers to equality remain. Access to technology and education that is inclusive is crucial in seeing injustice come to an end.
There has been slow progress over the last decade in aiming for a gender-equal world and we’ve seen the difference that equal job opportunities, equal healthcare and education, equal decision-making power and freedom from violence can make. Yet, there is still so much injustice and inequality in the world, according to Oxfam nearly two-thirds of the world’s 781 million illiterate adults are women, a proportion that has remained changed for two decades (Oxfam, n.d.).
For gender equality to be achieved, we must ensure women and girls have equal access to education and create clear pathways to inclusive workplaces for women in STEM.
Saxton works with several speakers actively advocating for gender equality in all aspects of life. Our Saxton female speakers are breaking barriers, forging new paths, and making waves in their industries whether it be STEM, entrepreneurship, or research into Future Trends and Technology, they can do it all.
