Alan Hargreaves is the author of the popular management book Recharge. In 2014, he collaborated with national cartoonist, Patrick Cook, to publish the follow-up 60 Second Recharge. Their latest book, Management Reboot, was released in January 2017.
Current work
Alan currently sits on the advisory board of the Hong Kong based private equity firm, Shaw Kwei and Partners. He is a director of Beyonics International and Chosen Limited, both listed companies in Singapore which have now been privatised.
Alan is a specialist in strategic development in rapidly changing business environments. He was a key driver behind Australia's first social impact bond and is heavily involved in not-for-profit organisations that focus on major social issues in disadvantaged communities. He is based in Sydney.
Previous experience
Managing Director: Once the Financial Editor of Radio Television Hong Kong, he joined British investment bank Hoare Govett in 1984, becoming managing director and overseeing the group's expansion across Asia. In 1990 he and three fellow directors orchestrated a management buyout.
USA: In 1993, he moved to New York as CEO of US operations where he rebuilt the firm's business, lifting US rankings from 7th to 2nd and boosting market share to over 20%. He oversaw a joint venture with the investment bank, Smith Barney, launched new operations on the West Coast and introduced new Asian investment vehicles to the US. In 1996, he led the first listing of a Chinese company on the New York Stock Exchange.
Australia: At the turn of the millenium, the firm was sold to ABN Amro. Alan returned to Australia as Managing Director of ABN Amro Australia to build a top tier presence in Australian stockbroking. This was achieved with the acquisition of BZW Australia.
Investment: In 2000, he left the firm to concentrate on his own investment interests, including portfolio management, private equity and breeding horses.
Education: Alan is an Economics graduate from the University of Sydney and has spent 35 years in Asian financial services and private equity.
