The future is not some place on a map that we are all going to - it is an idea in our mind.
Barrie Barton is a lawyer by qualification, an entrepreneur by nature and an urbanist by profession. He has spent his adult life thinking about the relationship between the type of places where we live, and the sort of people we become as a result. In 2005, he set up Right Angle: an urban innovation company, dedicated to understanding and improving life in cities.
Right Angle is now considered one of the world’s most influential city-making companies, operating on four continents across an exceptionally broad range of projects: from rapid positive gentrification in Africa to luxury precincts in Asia.
At the big end of town, Right Angle helps governments, large brands and property owners understand how cities are changing and what people will need in the future. These insights are then used to develop creative concepts for future places that increase environmental, social, cultural and economic value.
Barrie’s public speaking and conversational skills mean he is regularly engaged to facilitate workshops with the C-suite and design professionals.
At the fine-grain end of town, Right Angle has started numerous notably successful businesses that they own and operate including Australia’s first-ever online city guides, Melbourne’s Rooftop Cinema, Golden Age Cinema & Bar, Paramount Recreation Club and the newly transformed Lorne Theatre.
In late 2019, Barrie was named one of Harper’s Bazaar’s Visionary Men for his contribution to city life.

Barrie's keynote helped reconnect our employees to our purpose to create the world's best places. Barrie spoke about the global mega-trends impacting our sector and inspired 1,000 employees from our development business across 4 events in Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. We had some terrific feedback to his session which certainly opened our employees' eyes to the opportunities available to them respond to those trends through their work for Lendlease. Barrie is thought provoking. He gets people thinking beyond tomorrow and, at the same time, keeps it very real and tangible for the audience to own.
Barrie and Right Angle Studio are at the forefront of placemaking innovation and urban strategy. REMIX Summits seeks out those people that are positively transforming life in our cities to share their stories and Barrie is a compelling thinker and storyteller with thatrare ability to combine theory and real-world delivery and experience.
