I think it's important to bring joy into every single part of your life wherever you can.
Brooke Boney has been best known as TODAY’s News and Entertainment Presenter for the Nine Network. With a background in political journalism, having previously worked for National Indigenous Television (NITV), SBS and the ABC, Brooke joined the TODAY Show in 2019 after her role as Triple J’s weekday morning news presenter.
In April 2025, Brooke is releasing her book ‘All of It’, a personal collection of witty and heartfelt reflections on love, loss, and ambition.
In July 2024, Brooke made the decision the leave the Nine Network to study her Masters of Public Policy at Oxford University in the UK. Just prior to departing for Oxford, Brooke was in France as an integral part of the Nine Network’s coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. In 2023, Brooke was delighted to co-host the ARIAs for Nine and Stan and was also heard as a popular special guest host on the Will and Woody national drive radio show for KIIS FM.
Growing up in Muswellbrook in the NSW Hunter Region with her mum and five younger brothers and sisters, she caught the media bug early in life, volunteering in community radio while in high school. After leaving school, she worked as an advertising cadet at the Australian Financial Review before leaving to complete a journalism degree.
Brooke has been at the forefront of youth culture since she began working in media in 2010, and as a proud Gamilaroi woman, has written a lot about what it’s like to be an Aboriginal person in Australia.
Talking Points
NAIDOC Week: On Indigeneity and the 2023 Referendum
As we mark 50 years of NAIDOC Week, I want to share a story that feels personal and important. The theme for 2025, "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy," resonates deeply with me, as I think about how far we've come and how far we still have to go. This talk isn't just about the past—though we honour our history, our ancestors, and the groundwork they've laid. It's about the future. It’s about the young leaders and the next generation of Indigenous voices who will shape what's ahead.NAIDOC Week: On Indigeneity and the 2023 Referendum
In this conversation, I'll unpack what it means to be Aboriginal today—what it means to hold the weight of your Indigeneity in a country that hasn't always been kind or inclusive. I’ll reflect on the 2023 referendum and what that moment meant for Indigenous Australians, and I’ll be real about what it means to live in this space between identity, culture, and belonging.
This isn't about defining Aboriginality by the numbers or by what others think it should look like. It’s about understanding that, despite the challenges we face—colourism, systemic racism, the constant need to prove ourselves—our Indigeneity is woven into everything we are. It’s the strength we draw from our Elders, the resilience passed down through generations, and the vision we hold for a better future for our young people.
I’ll talk about how it feels to be both proud of who you are and sometimes forced to prove it, navigating a world where your Indigeneity is questioned or misunderstood. Through humour, stories, and some hard truths, I hope to give audiences a glimpse into the complexities of living as an Aboriginal person in Australia today, while also celebrating the strength and vision that comes with it.
This is a conversation about legacy, about courage, and about the bright future ahead that is rooted in the wisdom of those who came before us.
Key Takeaways:
- A heartfelt and honest exploration of what it means to be Aboriginal today.
- Reflections on the impact of the 2023 referendum and what’s next for Indigenous Australians.
- A celebration of the next generation of Indigenous voices and leaders, empowered by the past and shaping the future.
