What is IDAHOBIT?
Observed annually on 17 May, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) marks the historic 1990 decision by the World Health Organization to remove homosexuality from its International Classification of Diseases. Today, IDAHOBIT serves as a powerful global movement, raising awareness of the violence, discrimination, and inequalities still faced by LGBTQIA+ communities worldwide.

Why IDAHOBIT Matters

Despite progress in LGBTQIA+ rights, many individuals continue to experience barriers to equality, from workplace discrimination to social stigma and legal challenges. IDAHOBIT provides an opportunity to:

  • Raise awareness about LGBTQIA+ rights and issues
  • Advocate for policy changes and legal protections
  • Foster inclusion and allyship within workplaces, schools, and communities
  • Celebrate LGBTQIA+ resilience and achievements

IDAHOBIT 2025 Theme: "The Power of Communities"

This year’s theme, “The Power of Communities,” highlights the strength that emerges from unity, activism, and allyship. From grassroots organisations to global advocacy, it recognises the contributions of human rights defenders, LGBTQIA+ civil society groups, and allies in the fight for equality.
