Lindy Burns is one of Australia's senior radio broadcasters. After more than 26 years with the ABC, no major event or issue during that time, whether political, sporting, musical or environmental, has escaped her attention or comment. Equally comfortable speaking with Prime Ministers, comedians, scientists and talkback callers, her innate sense of fairness and humour, coupled with a rare ability to truly listen, has seen her rise from a weekend sports reporter role in Newcastle, NSW to the host of the Drive program on ABC Melbourne, to host of Statewide Evenings since January 2012.
Previous experience
Background: Born in Wollongong and raised in Newcastle, Lindy is a product of her formative years in regional Australia. There is little artifice in her presentation and what you hear is what you get.
Education: She is a graduate of History and Drama from the University of Newcastle and completed a Diploma in Education the following year. Teaching, however, proved that patience wasn't always her virtue and the search was on to find her true calling.
Radio: Radio didn't arrive on the scene until 1990 when Lindy was 30, when a 'road to Damascus' experience on the Newcastle to Sydney freeway saw her walk into the ABC in Newcastle and ask for work. During the past 27 years, she has produced and presented a range of programs for the ABC including sports reporting for Triple J, presenting the state-wide Sunday program in NSW, eight years hosting the Drive and Afternoon programs in Newcastle, before being coaxed to Melbourne twelve years ago. Twice nominated for Broadcaster of the Year award for ABC radio, she is now firmly entrenched in the Victorian radio scene.
Personal: She admires musicians, health professionals and mountaineers, is a good cook and teaches yoga in her spare time. She is married with an elderly cat called Milly.
