Steve Bedwell is an internationally renowned stand up comedian, radio and television host, producer, comedy consultant and mentor, aria nominated recording artist and author.
Current work
But it is stand up comedy that is Steve's true artistic passion. He regularly performs in all major comedy venues across Australia and overseas, including feature shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. In 2001 he travelled to Los Angeles to perform as part of an all-Australian comedy showcase at Flappers Comedy Club. He has performed sell-out shows at the National Theatre and the Comedy Club as well as a fourteen-week season at the Mercury Lounge in Crown Casino as well as the Comedy Room at the Sydney Star. Steve is still a regular fixture on the Australian comedy circuit.
Steve is also a passionate mental health advocate, heavily involved in mental health awareness and education in the wider community and uses his profile to help break down the stigma attached to mental health issues. He is the Australian ambassador for WISE Stand Up For Mental Health, a program that takes people who live with mental illness and teaches them to confront their issues and talk about them via the public forum of stand up comedy. Steve himself lives with Bi-polar 2 and speaks from stark experience when discussing mental health in the workplace as well as the wider community.
Previous experience
Triple M: Steve is probably best known in radio circles as being one half of the highly successful Melbourne Triple M breakfast radio duo, Timbo and Bedders for Breakfast, a lot they occupied from 1998 to 2001 during which time they were the Number 1 FM Breakfast show in Melbourne. An album that Steve and Tim recorded, Nine Inch Males, was nominated for an ARIA award in 1998.
3AAW: Steve has also been a regular post and panellist on 3AW, appearing on the Sunday Morning Program as well as hosting fill-in morning shifts. Steve has also filled in for Ernie Siglet, Denis Walter and Mike Brady as well as hosting a long running string of over-night programs.
SAFM: Adelaide's SAFM was Steve's broadcasting home from 1994 until 1996 where he hosted the breakfast programme Steve Bedwell and The Crew. It was during this time that Steve also hosted the Austereo syndicated sows The Steve Bedwell Experience and the Steve Bedwell Sunday Brunch.
Writer: Steve was also Head Writer for the Seven Networks Tonight Live with Steve Vizard and also wrote for Full Frontal, Wedlocked, Foxtel's Shark Bay and the Nine networks re-boot of In Melbourne Tonight. Steve was also the creative consultant for Russell Gilbert Live on the Nine network. Steve also starred in and produced a talk-show pilot for the Seven network titled Up Late with Steve Bedwell which spun into him being the producer of the short lived The Eric Bana Show – Live.
TV: Steve also hosted two years of his own show on the Comedy Channel, Bedders Time. This show was a series of celebrity interviews combined with stand up comedy pieces. Steve travelled to America to interview Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien and Chris Rock for the show. Steve regularly appears on chat and panel shows across all networks.
Author: As a columnist Steve has contributed to the Herald Sun, The Australian Jewish News, as well as the Sydney Morning Herald and for two years wrote a weekly humorous column for the Adelaide Advertiser. Steve has also authored six books with diverse publishers as the ABC, Melbourne University Press and Rockpool Publishing across a range of subjects from biography to social history. One book, Holden Versus Ford became a best seller.
